Baliem Valley tour In July we visited the Baliem Valley. We chose Onesius Lokobal as our guide. We chose him because he is from the Dani tribe and because he had many good reviews. It turned out that we made a good choice. He responded to our email inquiry immediately and we agreed on a time. We contacted him several times before leaving because we had additional questions and Onesius always answered quickly. When we arrived at the airport in Wamena, he was already waiting for us with his team, driver and cook/porter. Every day he explained to us where we were going and how the day would go. He and his boys took care of our every step on the difficult terrain. We also always had plenty of food and water. We are very grateful to them for a wonderful vacation. Incroyable We spent 4 incredible days in the Balem Valley with a passionate local guide. One of the highlights: meeting Papuans in traditional dress in their villages. The exchanges were sincere, and seeing their way of life so closely was deeply affecting.The landscapes are spectacular – between mountains, forests and remote villages. The organization was fluid.A true human and cultural adventure, far from the classic tourist circuits. What to do if you are looking for authenticity!

Baliem Valley I had a 3 days'tour with him, the first day trekking to the north, the second day to the south, the third day a pig festival which was the highlight one should never miss! Everything was well organized and the hotel/food was also good.

Worth using. Onesius is a good guide, a bit shy but a good man. He always tried to protect us and always check for any inconvenience. The time arrangements were thorough, and it seemed nice to be kind to all the people who met, not only the Dani people. The Dani traditional villages knew how to show in a decorated space like the folk villages, but it was a good experience, and I wish they could continue to live the way they are now. Of course it's a very expensive trip, but I recommend going at least once. The pig catcher's behavior was somewhat cruel, but the locals liked it, and the locals were happy to eat deliciously. However, onesius is a good man.

Papua experience We have spent 4 days in Wamena Valley with Onesius. Everything was organised very well with attention to all the detail. There were no delays, no problems of any kind. We did trekking into the hills and stayed a night in the village, visited a cave, saw the ancient mummy and witnessed a day celebration in a village with pig roasting. I would highly recommend this experience

Amazing Baliem Valley An incredible experience organised by Onesius. We got in contact about a month before the trip, asking for an itinerary. Onesius was very organised and immediately proposed different options. He was also flexible when we had to cut a day off the itinerary due to changes in travel plans. It is comforting to have this level of support when travelling to remote and intimidating Papua.Once we arrived, we were picked up from the airport and every detail was taken care of. We loved the 3 day trek, where we slept at Klise and Ugem, and saw the local village life in the mountains. We are in good shape and would say the trek was of medium difficulty - keeping in mind the porters were carrying all the water and food. Onesius didn't come on the trek himself but sent a member of his family, Hiron, who was a lovely and enthusiastic guide. The supplied food was varied and tasty, all cooked fresh every day. The hotel in wamena was very nice and comfortable, felt very luxurious after sleeping in the villages. We quickly visited the caves and mummy in the north on the afternoon after the trek, which are interesting but not an essential part of the travel program if short on time.The highlight by far was the pig festival. An entire village, part of Onesius' family, came to life for the occasion. All dressed in traditional attire, singing and dancing, mock fighting and eventually preparing a pig feast, this was an incredible sight. Absolutely do not miss this in the itinerary, never mind the expense. The cost of the trip is high but Onesius is generous and distributes the money across his many relatives and contacts in the villages - you feel like you are supporting everybody there. Definitely recommended!

Best Guide in the Area We enjoyed 4 days of the Baliem Valley guided by Onesius.He is very knowledgable about the area and we enjoyed our trips together with him very much. He knows a lot about the culture and traditions of the Dani and can show you all the highlights. We felt very safe while traveling with him and from pick-up until drop-off at the airport, he truly did his best. If you are looking for a guide to travel Baliem and the area, I’d highly recommend Onesius.

A beautiful life experience in the Baliem Valley Our 2-day trek in the Baliem Valley. Our driver came to pick us up with our Onesius guide around 9am. They were accompanied by our two porters John and Welemus who carry sleeping bags, all meals and drinking water for 2 days. After 3/4 of a drive our SUV was blocked by a flash flood of the night that completely cut the road. The river was raging and a large tow truck was working to re-establish the track across the river that flows into the Baliem River. At night, torrential rain collapsed part of the mountain upstream. After 1h20 waiting we boarded another 4x4 that kindly offered to make us cross the river. This black spot past our trek started under a beautiful and warm sun. The paths taken have been more or less easy. In some places the rain at night had made the trail particularly delicate with slopes of 50% waiting for a misstep on our part to take us away. After a few hours of walking in magnificent landscapes we arrived at our campground, received by the owner of the place. Warm and friendly meeting with big smiles at the key. We took possession of our typical Papuan box with 2 summary mattresses and no other amenities. After a coffee break in traditional Papuan cuisine (wood fire in the center of the hut) we visited the village of Klise of about 500 inhabitants, located at about 1900 m altitude. Onesius organized us a cooking session prepared by our host's wife again in another kitchen with wood fire. Unique experience. You could smell a little bit of the burned pig outside the hut. The cooking time of the Bakar Batu allowed us to take a short walk above the village at almost 2000 m. Extraordinary views of the Baliem Valley. Back to the kitchen where Sarah dismantled her oven with all its layers of stones, banana leaves, ashes, earth and others indefinite. We were able to taste the sweet potatoes prepared like this. Anne really liked it. Return to our cabin while waiting for the dinner prepared by Welemus one of our porters. Meals based on rice, pasta, chicken and beef/tuna croquette. And as dessert a pineapple from the village of God's Thunder. The next morning we woke up around 6:30 after a night a little cool on mattresses a little tired outside our hut, we were greeted by some inhabitants of the village offering us their local handicrafts. After some discussion about the price, we bought some local Papuan crafts. Breakfast followed in the kitchen where on the ground a dried hay mat allows to have some comfort. The toast was prepared on a “traditional toaster”, and the pure Wamena arabica coffee of a very good quality was served to us (in infusion). The toast is accompanied by pineapple jam and local Nutella. Again we had the pleasure of eating a whole pineapple as well as delicious passion fruit. Around 9am departure for this last day in the valley. Very nice course a little rough while downhill and uphill where we made beautiful meetings on this trek. We have learned to communicate in their traditions, we go to people and we use our hands by lowering ourselves, as a way of respect and gratitude, especially with the elders. Yeskiel, made for Anne a nice necklace of yellow flowers while walking barefoot on a very rocky path and this for 6 hours. Lay lunch on a superb view of the valley. The last part of the trek was along the Baliem River which is a very fertile area where Papuans grow sweet potatoes, corn, onions, carrots mainly. After crossing a 50 m suspension bridge over the furious river, 3/4 hour walk took us to the place where our driver was waiting for us. A very nice day again and a unique experience in this very authentic valley.

Meeting the Papuans Good morning. Wishing to discover the population of Papua, I actively looked for a guide (recommended). All the agencies offered exorbitant prices. I finally found Onesius' contact. He offered me 3 days of trekking with discovery of the tribes. The price was still very high but much less than the agencies and this is certainly the price to pay to go to a place off the beaten track. As promised, Onesius (part of the Dani tribe) was waiting for us at the airport (me, my husband and my 11 year old son). For 3 days, he showed us extraordinary sites, we were able to rub shoulders with the population. He organized meals, accommodation, administrative documents... everything was perfect. I highly recommend this guide!!!! Pauline
